WonderCon 2022 - Was It Good?

We had a blast at WonderCon 2022 in Anaheim!

It was our first nerdy convention since 2019, our first group cosplay ever, AND it was our most successful con, in terms of content production.

The cosplayers, the vendors, and the panels were all incredible and you could feel the energy. It was like people were ready to get back out and celebrate their inner nerds and fandoms with the enthusiasm of Boba Fett riding a bantha.

Personally, it felt like Marvel cosplay had this Con on lock. There were plenty of Star Wars and DC floating around, but nothing held a candle to Marvel. And specifically X-Men. One can’t help but wonder if the rumors of X-Men finally breaking into the MCU might be helping the cause.

We went the Star Wars route, debuting a full Boba Fett cosplay, affectionately nicknamed Boba Fresh, which was modeled by Arjuna. Ravi suited up in his Mandalorian armor, while Krishna donned a Justin Bieber-Esque wig and did his best emo-Luke Skywalker impression. We were joined by Natalie Lucia in a finished Cobb Vanth wearing Boba Fett’s armor. And yes, we were joined by a Hasbro Grogu.

If you want a good laugh, you can check out pictures and videos of this group cosplay on our socials.

Of course, there’s still this little thing called COVID flying around, but the processes in place were stout. You couldn’t get into the convention without proof of vaccination. A tag was then provided and was checked every time you entered the convention. Masks were required indoors and it seemed most people actually complied with this rule.

It made cosplaying a bit more difficult as tags are hard to present when you’re wearing full Mandalorian armor and masks aren’t part of every costume. BUT, we personally never saw any complaining or fighting over these measures. In fact, the whole experience was pleasant, and that was made possible by friendly staff AND compliant con visitors.

There were perhaps not as many vendors as in previous cons, but the selection of toys, art, models, figures, etc was still impressive and many hours (and money) were lost perusing the selections.

WonderCon 2022 is the first of a full slate of in-person conventions set for this year. Star Wars Celebration (also in Anaheim) is in May and if it’s run anything like WonderCon, it’ll be a seamless experience and a ton of fun.

We’ll be there of course. And we’ll also be on the podcast stage doing a LIVE episode of Was it Good? So please, if you’re at the convention, come say hi. And follow us on Twitter @Wasitgood for exact dates, times, and details.

We also have to give our profuse thanks to the following:

Without the help of these amazing creatives, our weekend would have been pure bantha poodoo. Please go give them a follow for some entertaining content.

To wrap this up, WonderCon was a massive success. The measures in place ensured a safe and fun environment. And we can’t wait for more!
